OMK Day & Dinner - Saturday 11 May 2019
Guest Speaker: Phil de Glanville

We are delighted to announce OMK and former England rugby captain, Phil De Glanville (Mount House 1978-81), as our guest speaker for the OMK Dinner in May. Phil won 38 England caps in his seven years in the England squad, including both World Cups in 1995 and 1999. We are privileged to hear from Phil whose illustrious career on the rugby pitch, and now in business, will make for an excellent evening. The day's events at the School start at 2pm with the OMK cricket match against the School team, and this year the OMK golf competition at Tavistock Golf Club will take place on the same day (with a midday start). Bookings for the Day and Dinner will open in the new year - we will send you an email and application form by email.

New Head Master announced

The Governors are delighted to announce that, from a very strong field of candidates, Mr Guy Ayling has been appointed as Head Master and Principal of the Foundation. Mr Ayling succeeds Mark Semmence who, after a highly successful tenure, leaves Mount Kelly in April to take up the post of Head Master at Repton School. Guy joins Mount Kelly from Llandovery College where he is currently Warden (Head Master), a post he has held for six years. He will be in post from April 2019.

Strictly Come Dancing

Lauren Steadman (2007-11), usually known for her success in the world of paratriathlon, was a contestant in this year's series of BBC Strictly Come Dancing. Competing with her dance partner, AJ, she made it all the way to the semi-finals, a fantastic achievement. Having won the title of ITU World Triathlon Champion (PS4 category) only the week before the series began, her confidence grew on the dance floor as each week went by, and the MK community has been avidly supporting her all the way. Well done Lauren

The 560km English Channel Long Swim

Endurance swimmer and environmentalist Lewis Pugh (1980) successfully completed his challenge to swim the full length of the English Channel (560km or 348 miles) from Land's End to Dover in 49 days. His campaign, The Long Swim, aimed to raise awareness of the threat to the UK's coastal waters from climate change, over-fishing and plastic pollution. A UN Ambassador of the Seas, Lewis Pugh campaigns tirelessly for the protection of our oceans worldwide.

Pedalling for Prostate Cancer UK

Having been fighting prostate cancer for five years, Simon Aylett (1977-80) decided to undertake an incredible bucket-list journey pedalling 2,430 miles from Sussex to Syracuse in Sicily. He set off on 1 September, riding his e-bike and towing a bespoke lightweight caravan (with sleeping room, a solar roof, a battery bank and a small kitchen). Despite a few knockbacks, he arrived at his destination on 31 October, and has raised over £27k for Prostate Cancer UK in the process.

 £100M raised for UK charities

Fellow OMKs David Weil (1981-83) and Mark Hannaford (1981-84) jointly founded events management company, Across The Divide, over 20 years ago. The organisation once again provided all the logistics behind the BBC Rickshaw Challenge for Children in Need. This year's rickshaw team raised over £78k, and crossing the finishing line marked an incredible milestone for ATD itself - the company has now raised over £100M for UK charities since 1997!

Graham Cooper, former Newton Housemaster

The Mount Kelly community was saddened to hear of the death of Graham Cooper, former teacher and Newton Housemaster at Kelly College from 1968-1990. The wake after Graham's funeral service was held in the College Library and was attended by over 130 OMKs, former colleagues and friends. Also fondly remembered as a great rugby coach, we are hoping that many of Graham's "rugby boys" will reunite this summer at the OMK Dinner on 11 May - to find out more, please email Anne Williams:

The choir has also been named the 'Devon School Choir of the Year' and will perform in a Christmas charity concert at Exeter Cathedral on Friday 14 December.

Attorney General Geoffrey Cox QC

The College welcomed former parent Geoffrey Cox QC MP to Mount Kelly in November. Mr Cox spoke to Sixth Form pupils during a relaxed Q&A session in the College Library about the life of a modern MP. Inevitably the discussion turned to Brexit and Mr Cox's key role as Attorney General, though he deftly avoided revealing any Cabinet secrets.

OMK Hockey

Thank you to all the lovely OMK Ladies, and their supporters, who played hockey against our 1st XI Mount Kelly team on 17 November. The 7-0 score to MK does not reflect the quality of the match which was played in great spirit.

50 Years On

On 13 October, we welcomed back a fanastic group of OMKs who left the College in 1968 for a highly successful and very happy 50 year reunion. Some had travelled from as far as the States, Canada and Belgium and for many it was their first time back since leaving; everyone enjoyed meeting old friends and former teachers, John Killngbeck and John Mann.

Many thanks to James Nicolle (78-83) for organising the biennial Oz Reunion in Sydney in November. Everyone had a very jolly evening and James read out a special message from the Head Master in which he wished everyone well, and delivered the latest news from Mount Kelly in Tavistock.
