OMK
Day and Dinner 2018 |
|
Over 100 former pupils and their families
came back to Mount Kelly for this year's OMK day
on Saturday 12 May. With alumni travelling
in from all over the country and
overseas, it was a fantastic day of happy
reunions and memories shared. The OMK Dinner in
the evening was led by guest speaker Addison
Gelpey (84-88) (pictured with former staff,
Anne Williams) who put his expertise
as an auctioneer to great use in leading an
auction of prizes kindly donated by fellow OMKs.
Eight lots raised almost £8,000 for the
newly-launched Mount Kelly Bursary
Fund. |

Mount Kelly Bursary Fund |
|
We
were delighted to launch the Mount Kelly Bursary
Fund at the OMK Dinner in May. As a school that
is neither wealthy nor well-endowed, we
currently provide bursarial support
for approximately 10% of our pupils. The
Bursary Fund has been established with the aim
to seek support from the wider MK community to
enable us to offer a greater number of
means-tested bursaries for deserving pupils,
offering them the education, opportunities,
confidence and ambition to succeed in life.
Abraham Kopparambil (pictured) is one
such bursary recipient. If anyone would
like to contribute or discuss this further,
please contact Fran Reid. |

OMK Bridge Open |
|
The Old Mount Kelleian Bridge, linking the
College with the Prep, was officially opened on
22 June by the Chair of Governors, Rear Admiral
Chris Snow, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony which
was attended by the Mayors of Tavistock and of
West Devon, Governors and OMK representatives.
This was one of Chris' last events at Mount
Kelly before handing over the Chair to Dr Kevin
Wilson. The Old Mount Kelleians' Association
kindly donated a generous sum towards this very
special project which now enables pupils
and staff to walk from one side of the
campus to the other, uniting the school
community even more. |

Alumnet
- a digital online networking platform for
OMKs |
|
We
are delighted to have launched a social
networking platform, Alumnet, for our alumni
that will allow you to keep in touch with your
friends as well as make new connections with Old
Mount Kelleians for business/career
purposes. We believe Alumnet will offer
you, as one of our valued former pupils, huge
benefits, both personally and professionally. It
is as easy to use and access as social media
platforms (like Facebook and LinkedIn), but is
100% dedicated to the needs of alumni. https://get.alumnet.social/mount_kelly/ |

OMKs
in London |
|
On 26 June, over 60 alumni joined
the Head Master for another highly successful
London drinks reception, this year held at
the newly-opened, multi-award winning Sekforde Arms in Clerkenwelll,
kindly hosted by proprietor David Lonsdale (OK
75-81). Former pupils of all generations
thoroughly enjoyed catching up with old friends,
former staff and school news at what was a very
happy and relaxed
occasion. We are grateful
to David for his generosity and warm welcome and
highly recommend a visit to The
Sekforde Arms in
Clerkenwell. |

OMK
Cricket |
|
In the absence of the School 1st XI who were
away playing against Eton College, a young
Mount Kelly 'A' XI, captained by George Bott,
welcomed this year's OMK Cricketers,
captained by Clive Insole (89-90) on OMK
Day in May. Put into bat first, the OMKs set
what must be considered one of their better
totals of the past few years, of 189-5. In
the end the OMKs were worthy winners with the
school being restricted to 101 off their 25
overs, leaving the OMKs as winners by 88
runs. The School looks forward to the
next contest where they hope to reverse the
tables! |

News
from Mount Kelly Hong Kong |
|
As readers will know, Mount Kelly
International has established a Pre-School and
Prep School in Hong Kong. Both Schools
have received their Education Bureau
Registration Certificates as of September 2017
and January 2018, and we are delighted to
report that they are continuing to grow with
further developments planned. The MK Shackleton
Programme, which introduces pupils to the
importance of helping others through community
projects is thriving in the HK schools, and
the HK Prep pupils recently visited The
Salvation Army, Hoi Tai Residence for Senior
Citizens in Mong Kok, spending time with the
residents. |

Lewis
Pugh to swim 350 miles in Action for Oceans
Campaign |
|
Endurance swimmer Lewis Pugh (OMH 1980) will
embark on an epic 350-mile swim along
the length of the English Channel from
Land's End in Cornwall to Dover, Kent, in just
Speedo swimming trunks, a cap and goggles. "The
Long Swim", which begins on July 12, marks the
start of a world-wide Action for Oceans
campaign calling on governments to fully
protect at least 30% of the world's oceans by
2030. Lewis expects to reach Dover
towards the end of August, averaging five
hours of swimming, covering between 10 and 20
kilometres, each day. The swim is the equivalent
of crossing the Channel from Dover to Calais 16
times over! We wish him well and will
follow his progress via Sky News. |
