A Summer of Events

Dear ^Preferred name^

We hope you enjoy reading some of our latest news on recent events; in London hosted by David Lonsdale (1975-81) and OMK Day and Dinner in May. The Golf Day scheduled in June had to be postponed due to torrential rain, but will take place on 16 September - let’s hope that the weather is kinder then!

The OMK database will soon allow you to access and update your records and book events online and we will be in touch about this in the autumn. Data protection law now requires us to obtain your explicit permission to communicate with you, so please take a moment of your time to complete the online form.

Do continue to send in your news for the OMK magazine and visit us at the School as well. We wish you all a very relaxing summer and look forward to being in touch with you again in September.

With kind regards

Fran Reid, Development & Alumni Manager

Over 120 former pupils and their families came back to Mount Kelly for this year’s OMK day on Saturday 13th May.  With alumni travelling from all over the country, Europe and America, and with lots of former staff in attendance, it was a fantastic day of happy reunions and memories shared. That evening, some 100 guests attended the black-tie dinner at which we welcomed World Champion Para triathlete and Para Olympian, Lauren Steadman, as after dinner guest speaker. OMK Day and Dinner 2018 will take place on Saturday 12th May.

On Wednesday 28 June, over 70 Old Mount Kelleians joined the Head Master and the Development & Alumni Manager, Fran Reid, for the annual London drinks reception, this year held in Clerkenwell. The event was generously hosted by David Lonsdale (OK 1975-81; pictured above with friends) and former pupils of all generations thoroughly enjoyed catching up with old friends, former staff and school news in what was a very happy and relaxed occasion.

OMK Cricket Match
Class of 2017
The annual OMK Cricket match against the School’s 1st XI was held in the afternoon of the OMK Day with brothers Ben Grove (current pupil) and Rob Grove (OMK 06-12) captaining their respective teams. With the School batting first it was pupil Leon Horn who passed 50 for the fifth time this year, finishing on 74 and Max Brady 54 not out who guided the school to 233 for 5. An outstanding start with the ball from Tom Rogers and Jacob Staig had the OMKs 40 for 4 when the rain came. With 10 overs constituting a game, the School came out victorious on run rate. Thank you to Clive Insole (1989-90) for once again organising the OMK team.
Before exam study leave, our Upper Sixth pupils enjoyed their OMK leavers' breakfast on Friday 26 May, as well as a special chapel service and lunch to which parents were also invited. The day was a happy one, made all the more memorable by the monitors' pranks the night before which included parking a Mini in the Dining Hall!

School Update
In June Chris Morley was presented with a garden bench as a thank you from the School, and in gratitude for his 11 years’ service as Chairman of the Old Kelleians and Old Mount Kelleians (2005-2016). Head Master, Mark Semmence, presented it to him at the Tavistock Golf Club at what would have been the OMK Golf event had it not been rained off. Chris Morley (centre) is seated with David Anthony (former treasurer of the OMK Committee) and former staff member, Anne Williams.

This year the Development and Alumni office has organised 13 events which have been attended by almost 400 alumni and friends in the UK and overseas. We are always delighted to welcome visitors back to the School and this summer have shown around OMKs from the UK and from other corners of the world, including Australia, Germany, the Phillipines and Japan.
Congratulations to Lauren Steadman (08-11) who has just won Gold for GB in the ITU Para-triathlon World Cup in Italy in July and to Flora Duffy who won the elite women's race in the World Triathlon Series in Leeds in June.  Amy Lloyd (08-15) will be leading the fundraising and training of 25 students from Bath University before embarking on a six day charity trek up Mount Kilimanjaro to raise vital funds for Action Against Hunger - to support her please click here.

The School is delighted to announce that planning permission has now been granted to construct a footbridge across the River Tavy connecting the Prep and the College.  This bridge - and the associated pedestrian crossing over the A386 due to be installed later this month - will be of enormous benefit, allowing pupils and staff to cross between the College and Prep freely and safely.

The redevelopment of the Prep Library was completed over Easter, and this summer sees the exterior renovation of the main buildings at the College, a reconfiguration of the College Library and it is our intention to overhaul Big School, establishing it as a fully-functioning Performing Arts Centre.
