Torres Brothers on MasterChef

Brothers and restaurateurs Mario (1988-93) and Fabian (1990-95) Torres recently featured in an episode of BBC's Celebrity MasterChef. Episode 16 (of Series 14) saw the contestants travel to Tenerife to compete in two teams to cook up traditional island fare. Under the guidance of the two brothers, the chefs learned to prepare traditional Canarian rabbit stew, mojos (or sauces) and gofio (an ancient grain which is an island staple), as well as Canarian fish dishes. Mario and Fabian's multi award-winning restaurant, El Calderito de la Abuela, has been in the family for three generations and is considered one of the best places to eat in Tenerife. Harry Donnelly Wild_Bytes

Harry Donnelly (2010-17) is currently studying Wildlife Conservation at the University of Kent and spent the summer in Peru radio tracking giant anacondas, catching caiman and using camera traps to monitor Jaguars. In 2020 he is embarking on a long-term project in Malaysia researching colugos (gliding arboreal mammals). 1st XV Rugby Players Reunion

In November, we were delighted to welcome back former members of the 2000/2001 1st XI Rugby Team. Chief organiser of the gathering was Paul Lidster (1999-2001) who was joined by Gary Uglow (1997-2000), Jon Bourne (1999-2001), Oli Pitts (1999-2001) and Brian Venables (1997-2000). They visited some old haunts including Courtenay House and the Chapel, watched the school rugby fixtures against Truro School, and joined parents and staff for post-match tea.  If you would like to arrange a small (or large!) reunion at the School, don't hesitate to contact the Development Office.

A great reunion

Model United Nations at Oxford University

In November, ten Sixth Form pupils took part in the the Model United Nations Conference at Oxford University. The pupils, who are studying A Levels in Politics, History, Geography or Business Studies, presented position papers and speeches addressing some of the pressing issues in international politics, including freedom of speech and Article 10 of the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) and skeleton arguments on moot court scenarios concerning freedom of speech on online platforms. They had the opportunity to advocate before barristers and receive feedback on their positions and strength of the arguments presented. Sub-committees were led by Oxford University Law students. Congratulations go in particular to one of our candidates who was awarded the Best Advocate from the European Court of Human Rights Committee.

Choir wins Gold in Barcelona

The singers of Mount Kelly's flagship chamber choir took part in both concerts and competition at the Canta al Mar International Festival held in Calella near Barcelona over half-term. Competing against choirs from around the world, including Russia, Costa Rica, Indonesia and Hong Kong, they came away with a second place and Silver Diploma in the Youth Choir category. However, the best was yet to come as they competed in the Jazz category against excellent adult choirs from Scandinavia, and were awarded a Gold Diploma for their performances. They also performed in the monastery of Montserrat, a specatacular building perched high in the mountains above the Catalan countryside. It was a truly memorable trip for the young singers, and the Silver and Gold Diplomas confirmed their place as one of the best young choirs in the festival.

Remembrance at
Mount Kelly

Mount Kelly marked Remembrance with a series of events including a Concert of Hope and Remembrance that took place at St Eustachius' Church in Tavistock. The evening was in collaboration with Tavistock Rotary, Tapestry Choir and the Tavistock College choir, and was not only an opportunity to enjoy wonderful music, but also to reflect on the meaning of Remembrance. The Remembrance Service held at the College on Sunday 10 November was a poignant occasion, and was followed by an Act of Remembrance on the Parade Ground. Former Deputy Head of Mount House, Malcolm Bassett (1986-2016), laid the wreath on behalf of Old Mount Kelleians, after which the School's Roll of Honour from the Second World War was read out by the Head Boy and Head Girl.

The Mount Kelly Bursary Fund

We are very grateful to all OMKs, parents, staff and governors who are supporting the Mount Kelly Bursary Fund with regular or one-off gifts. Our aim is to enable more pupils with talent and potential to access a Mount Kelly education, who could not otherwise afford to do so. By supporting the Mount Kelly Bursary Fund, you will make a difference to the lives of the most deserving pupils, offering them the education, confidence and ambition to succeed in life. The power of collective giving is tremendous and a small, regular gift of just £10 a month can truly help change someone's life. To find out more about how you can support pupils like Abraham (pictured left) through the Bursary Fund, click on the link below.
